@Vals_Garden 's question, the lichen was growing on rocks. You can Google Javelina Rocks SNP and read more about their composition, but basically they're a kind of granite. Lichen of various species seem to be able to colonize most kinds of rock, though. I remember being struck at the time by the bright color of this particular kind.
