Only two submissions? I hope people who didn't want the pressure of doing research enjoyed it anyway. I did. The effort deserves a reward.

Both entries answered that red was the color of the first cultivated tomato, according to historians. The sources I checked indicated it was most likely a yellow fruited strain of S. pimpinellilifolium. I searched after reading those answers and found that some say they were red, so there is an element of inconclusiveness. For our purposes the question is moot.
