Would they necessarily have had to be grafted both top and bottom rather than just top @Lucy68 ? I had a small Japanese maple that was top grafted but I don't remember noticing a bottom graft (it was a much smaller dissected leaf type and when the dissected top died the leaves from the trunk were more like a "regular" Japanese maple.
