Chicagoland (Zone 5b)
Marnie, You can easily grow Pawpaws and Persimmons
Have you tried either of them yet?

YES! Thank you Diana! I grow them both. I have 3 varieties of paw paw and 2 varieties of American persimmon. I have also tried Asian persimmons so many times because I love them SO MUCH! But every tree eventually died Sad I am just on the cusp of their zone and spent so much $ trying every single variety available that is supposed to survive okay in zone 5. I even got cuttings from the famous Jerry Lehman (God rest his soul- he was a kind, generous man). He was in Terre Haute & sent me cuttings of special breeds that he created that he thought might do okay for me here (a little bit north of him). Unfortunately my skills at rooting cuttings was immature then, and they all failed.😭

Hammerojustice said: I've been taught to plant a zone or two colder than the one you're in, so I'd be pushing it it surviving in 6a on the edge of 5. Thanks

I spent so much time, effort and money on pushing my zone! Trying to grow everything under the sun that may only be a zone or 2 warmer than me. I try to count my successes instead of my failures (because if I counted my failures, I would have given up gardening long ago)πŸ˜… But I really can't speak of much that has survived outside of my zone over the last 20 years. Some things did well for a few years, but one bad winter and πŸ’€Even the things I bring in over winter seem to struggle much until they finally surcome. Now, I will wait to push my zone again until I get my walipini. I am growing Dragon fruit tho!! That's exciting! Going on 5 years strong now. (It's hard to kill a cactus I guess). Btw those prickly pear cactus do VERY well in zone 5 over winter. Just plant in full sun & fast draining soil
