It's been proven that rocks are BAD in the bottom of pots. They actually promote 'perched' water, water that should have drained away, but stays there and rots. Have you ever repotted anything and found no roots in the middle of the soilball, and all roots around the edges? Perched water causes that. The interior roots die.
