I was planting some of my grafted TP's from last year and to my surprise one of the roots was totally gone - not rotten, but disappeared. Walnut was placed there instead. I am protecting my potted grafted TPs to some extent - placing chicken wire or some rocks on the top, but I guess squirrels were craftier or faster. The funny part - the top of the scion was there, visible. I noticed some deterioration in foliage mid-summer and cut it off at one point but thought the graft was going dormant.
