I have found that fertility affects the expression ruffles. Years when I add fertilizer I notice that the blooms are more ruffly.

Lyn, if you ever get the chance to go through an Iris Judges training session, I'd recommend it. I learned so much from Thomas Johnson's training that he gave us a couple years back. I've attended a couple since then too, and I always learned something more. I have no intention of being an iris judge, but it helped me greatly in deciding what needs to be culled and what to keep from seedlings.
