I have found that using "turkey grit" found in local feed stores is great for all my succulents. Gives them good drainage even in plastic, self watering pots. When I put them out for the summer on my deck, I do have to dumpa ny water accumulating in the drain saucers. The grit is very small granite chips .
Only 1 problem when they bloom, necter is very sticky! I had one piece that fell out of the pot, hanging on the edge, knocked off by a coon. It layed on the deck all summer, no soil, water. I picked it up, put it in a pot and it grew!
