"The best time to prune is when your saw is sharp." The statement is much too broad and doesn't take into account any of the multiple variables that should be considered before pruning. E.g., WHEN we prune can have a marked effect on how enthusiastically the plant responds to the pruning. Pruning houseplants in fall/winter can be seriously deleterious to how full and compact the plant will have as it continues to grow. Pruning plants that bloom on new wood in spring will result in having no or far fewer blooms than had the pruning been undertaken immediately after blooming; and so on.
