That statement stuck in my craw sidewise...

I'm not believing people " die from it with grim regularity".
Not w/o supporting evidence....

I once saw someone try eating a small plant raw... he spit it out pretty quick...
People and animals usually don't continue to eat stuff that tastes bad.

While people do cook it, I'm not that adventurous...
I'd rather cook stuff that is well known to be safe.

One time, I even found a recipe for wine made from the berries... Sounded like more trouble than it was worth.
