Because most of the increase comes off of the 'heal' of the rhizome I plant 3 in a triangle with the the 'toes' all pointing the same way. If you plant with the toes pointing in you will have a circle with old rhizomes in the middle in a couple of years with the new growth around the circle. If you plant with the heals pointing in the new growth will soon crowd each other. A lot of this depends on how often you want to replant. That's my thinking....
