Hi Boot & Welcome!
I'm in Michigan, growing zone 4b.
I start Opalka (paste style) tomatoes in the house, southfacing windowsill, no grow light, mid-March in Jiffy plugs, then transfered to 4" pots filled with Burphee seed starting soil mix. I plant out in the garden when soil temperature rises to 60⁰F. The row is tilled, fertilized and covered with 4mil black plastic. I score an 'x' in the plastic & plant & stake.

I use this technique with all kinds of pepper varieties, too. One difference is with peppers I presprout seeds in wet paper towel in a zip bag in mid-February. Peppers take longer to sprout.
Glad you are here.
