These "Aralias" often loose whole branches in this way; disappointing but nothing can be done to save them (in my experience). Just cut the branches back at a point where there is good solid green wood.
More sunlight (esp. in winter) may help. BTW, these plants take full sun in the tropics, and usually look great.
