Lots of different anemone...
When I look at the seedheads in first post, I think thimbleweed, (Anemone virginiana).

The Anemone virginiana is better behaved than the spready japanese anemone...

Looking to see if above plant is colonizing from the roots should help to rule some plants out / in...

I believe that Anemone Coronaria is much shorter in stature than the plant under discussion.


In UK I have never seen or heard about Anemone virginiana...although a few nurseries do list it.
Where as there are several named Japanese Anemone ....Anemone hupehensis being just one. Another is Anemone x hybrida.
