I've been planting my tomatoes in between rows of peas; by the time the peas are done (late June), the tomatoes are big enough to stake/cage. I just snip the peas off at ground level, leaving the nitrogen fixing roots in the ground. Tried this with squash, but squash got too big too fast!
I am not "country" I am "landed gentry."
