This has been a busy afternoon. I started a big pot of beef stew (beef, onion, potatoes, rutabaga, parsnips, carrots, celery, and radicchio, seasoned simply with garlic powder and black pepper). There are two additional stew ingredients I didn't have-- I've not seen parsley root in the stores here, and I've had bad experiences with celery root (celeriac) being way too fibrous.

Then I went out to mow the lawn. I worked in spurts, taking a couple of breaks to rehydrate and rest. I'm about 40% of the way through the job. I may do more after supper, but then again, I may wait until tomorrow. The clover in the lawn has bounced back after the recent rains. Common lawn clover (white clover, Dutch clover) I just mow down along with the grass. But part of this lot was used for hay at one point, and stray red clover clumps still come up regularly. I mow around a few each year to keep them coming back.

Just for the heck of it I mowed around several of the big lawn toadstools. I like to see them each year. Once the visible parts have dried up, I'll mow them down-- after all the main part of this type of fungus is underground.
