That's one reason I try and make sure they are really dry before I ship and when I'm washing I try to get all of the old, dead roots and dead foliage and such off. I agree with Debra that a mild bleach solution should be fine. I've had some near to death and the bleach water helped them. Unless you plan to send them back I would at least try the bleach water.
