I don't think 4 o'clock seeds like getting cold. I grow them every year from seed (going to try saving the tubers this year) and I never get volunteers. The only volunteer I ever got was from an early blooming one, and one of the seeds it dropped sprouted before the first frost. I always start mine indoors because our growing season is so short here.
