I read an article be Barry Blyth that said the leaves provide nutriments for the plant over winter, and not to cut them until spring, so I don't. Yet my good friend who lives a few miles from me cuts hers down every fall, and she has beautiful iris too. I think it's a crap shoot. I might try the burning thing this fall on a few that are away from the buildings, just to see if it works.
Politicians are like diapers, they need to be changed often, and for the same reason.
