I must admit that the pictures I posted are views of my two best beds. All of mine do not look that nice. They were both empty beds fall of 2010. I added a generous quantity of organic matter, bags of dry leaves, compost from my pile and compost from the Cities green waste. I also added some 5-10-5 and bone meal. I tilled it in and planted in it 2011. Things really grow there. I hope to redo some other beds next summer. On established beds I band the clumps in early spring with something with a high middle number. I also put 2-3 handfuls of alfalfa pellets around each clump and work it in. I also use Miracle Grow with a high center number or a brand called Expert Gardener from Wal-Mart. It is cheaper and has trace elements. I just sprinkle a Tbs. or 2 around the clump, work it in and water in. I do this in early summer. Dissolving in water cans is to much work. I also water at least weekly from spring til fall.
