I use a bedsheet yes, but before I tuck them away for the season I water the pots thoroughly, then do nothing until I see sprout, always in February, at least these last few years anyway. The lilies and the tree peonies seem to get going at the same time, which is convenient When I first started this I was happy to see that everything survived nicely. So I have just done it the same ever since.
