Paul - This tip is more for people in my situation - no moisture. Newspapers wouldn't hold up in a wetter environment such as yours. Plus you probably don't have bad sun scalding there, either. We here in the Denver Metro have over 320+ days of sunshine a year and our moisture can be as low as 2-5% in the middle of the day.
