Noel, Did you ask them where they acquired this plant. I'm wondering if this could be a wild collected Caladium bicolor as opposed to a cultivar or hybrid. It is supposed to be an extremely variable species. Here are some links.

Also take a look a Bonitin's images of rainforest C. bicolor from Brazil (perhaps escaped but maybe not)..
