Thanks Lin, I should have remembered to look on Yucatan Living. I believe it is called Palo Rosa or Palo de Rosa, that's the one that sounds familiar. Interesting that it is native to Mexico and this area. While asking around for the name yesterday, someone told me that the city is starting a project to plant a lot more of them along new streets or streets that have lost their trees. Some of the newer neighborhoods around the city really need some street trees and apparently they are doing it. In the older parts of the city many of the street trees are flamboyán (royal poinciana) and lluvia de oro (golden shower tree). Apparently they can cause problems with their roots so they are not going to plant any more. Who knows, that could change with the next administration.
I have a couple pics of the Tabebuia that I will upload and I will add the spanish name. I'm pretty sure that Hok' ab is the name of the tree in Maya but I will check before I add it. One of the people I asked yesterday didn't know the name in spanish but said something like that in Maya as the local name. I really need to take some classes in Maya, I think it will at least make it easier for me to 'hear' words in that language.
