Garden Ideas: Level 1
Gnats caught my attention. This is the first year I have had gnats. I think I brought them in on a plant from thrift store.I suppose my potting mix might suit them but I won't change after many, many years.I get Miracle Grow potting soil on sale in late fall at Walmart at.$2 a bag if I watch.Got MG peat ,$2 for 2 cu ft.I mix it with more perlite & our own humusy soil DH gets when cutting wood at our timber. Also have a lot of aged leaf mold..I will sterilize mix in microwave for seeds & cuttings but don't bother for plants that are headed outdoors.I won't use poison because greenhouse is feet from my kitchen.Plants get submerged in container of soapy water before entering in fall. So far no dratted white flies or aphids. Just a few gnats.I caught a lot of gnats on yellow sticky traps.I wouldn't want the larva to eat my seedlings.
