That plant is sitting about 4 ft above the ground and yes the shelf is metal. I would be most suspect of birds as there are crape myrtles and beds and citrus to the right of there and this is a west facing area. Birds are in the arbor to the left also. Seems I need to move them to a better protected location...they were undisturbed on the south side of the house but I thought they required more than the 5 to 6 hours of direct sun they got there. We have birds of all sizes here from hummingbirds to hawks and owls and heron so no telling who may have found it tasty..
