Poppies are my favorite annuals.....any of the Papavers. (papaver orientale is perennial, the rest are annuals). They do best when you sow the seeds directly into the ground in fall, winter, or early spring. Probably too late now, though you could give it a try. The seedlings look like weeds, so be careful not to pull them out. The slugs seem to not eat these seedlings (unlike zinnias, which I do not directly sow anymore for that reason), although I do sow the poppies generously--so it's possible that some are getting eaten--not sure.
