My house in Utah is in zone 5a, and they did survive over winter. That's not to say that this is normal. My neighbors family owns a huge nursery, and he said he had never seen them overwinter anywhere other than in my yard. But, they did, and I had the same ones for several years. The seedlings are bad, but I do not feel guilty about pulling them. If they aren't where I want them, they are gone. Mine weren't able to bloom in winter because they were under lots of snow, but as soon as the snow melted, they were green!
