Thanks much for the response to you both! I will try to listen to that podcast when I get some extra time. Hadn't been back here much as I'm sitting at the hospital with a sickie. I have been taking a stack of plant books and reading to while away the time there.

My reading (and my winter herb success) made me start this thread. My reading and note taking has given me thoughts on herbs to plant in a shady area for a summer bed. The herbs suggested for shade were Comfrey, Costmary, Lovage and Sweet Woodruff.

A few other ideas for winter herbs were Salad Burnet (Poterrium sanguisorba) and Winter Savory (Satureja montana).

I didn't mean to exclude the Northern herb growers when I posted this. After all, the summer climate in some Northern areas may parallel our winter climate in the South.

In other words, any and ALL input is welcome! I'm all ears!
