n this month’s issue, we focus on crimson English Roses and have a special offer for newsletter readers. We highlight our Valentine’s Day bouquets and have details of our latest competition and news of our plans for the Philadelphia Flower Show.
Our recommended shipping window for gardeners in the far South, the South Eastern coastal and Western coastal regions will soon close. If you haven’t yet placed your order, and are not sure which roses to choose for your garden, here is a selection of our favorite English Roses for these areas.
Few of us can resist the beauty of a crimson rose. Even if you’re not expecting to receive a Valentine’s gift this year, by treating yourself to a beautiful shrub rose, you can enjoy the romance of garden roses all summer long. With our Valentine’s Day theme in mind, we’ve chosen five deep crimson shrub roses - all very different in character - to demonstrate the diversity of our collection. These reliable roses enjoy the heat and withstand humid conditions well. They are all great for cutting and are winter hardy down to zone 5, with the exception of The Dark Lady. Please bear in mind that these are bare root roses and will not be shipped for Valentine’s Day.
The Dark Lady
This rose excels in warmer areas and so performs much better in US gardens than in England.The large, sumptuous blooms have a wonderful Old Rose fragrance. In warmer areas it tends to be a rich, deep pink color.

Tess of the d’Urbervilles
This rose can be fanned out to create a sensational short climbing rose on a wall or pillar, but will remain surprisingly compact in warmer areas if summer pruned. There is a lovely old rose fragrance.

Darcey Bussell
Our featured rose is one of our best and most reliable crimson varieties. It flowers freely and has a nice, compact, bushy habit. It’s perfect for the front of the border or an oversized pot or planter.

LD Braithwaite
This is the brightest crimson rose in our collection.The blooms are beautiful wide rosettes and are produced freely. This shrub rose has pride of place in the border at the entrance to our UK Plant Centre.

William Shakespeare 2000
One of our most popular crimsons. The color is deep and velvety, gradually developing rich purple tones. The flowers are in the shape of wonderful quartered rosettes and have a powerful old rose fragrance.

Philadelphia Flower Show
We’re really excited that for the first time in seven years or more, David Austin will be exhibiting at the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show. We’re really looking forward to the chance to meet American gardeners and rose lovers after all this time. We’ll be proudly showcasing our new luxury cut roses and we have chosen a small, but choice selection of garden roses which we’ll be selling during the show. The event is open to the public from Sunday February 28th through Sunday March 7th, 2010. Please do make a

Photography Competition results
We are sorry that it has taken us so long to choose the winners of the last photography competition and promise to do better next time. We always say that the quality of the entries received gets better every year and that was certainly true this year. We have written to congratulate our winners and have awarded some extra runners up prizes to try to make amends.
News from England
The Huntington Library in San Marino, California, and New York’s Manhattan Rose Society, hold an annual series of lectures dedicated to the “Great Rosarians of the World”. Last month, David CH Austin was thrilled to be named the lecture series’ 2010 honoree. Now aged 83, David CH Austin doesn’t find it quite as easy to travel as he used to. Instead, he sent a video message which he recorded earlier in the summer when Clair Martin, curator of Rose Collections at The Huntington Library, visited the rose gardens here in Albrighton, UK.
We always enjoy receiving visitors from the United States. If you’re planning to visit the UK this summer, you might like to know that the best time to catch our world-famous rose gardens in full flower is usually late June. Of course as the garden is overflowing with fragrant English Roses, they will repeat flower in flushes during the summer. This means that the gardens will look good until the end of September, after a brief resting period in late July following the roses’ first main flush of flower.
Our philosophy is to offer gardeners a broad collection of English Roses, each with its own individual character.
