I would start by getting rid of the mulch. I think it is keeping it too damp. The fallen leaf looks like it is either from overwatering or sunburn (this can happen if the plant has been growing in semi-shaded condition and then moved). As long as your branches are firm do not worry too much. Wait for and then enjoy your flowers!
