Hostas come in different sizes so you can do mini med or large. So yes some would need a big pot but a lot you could use a small pot no problem.
I have seen a lot of people now buying the mini hostas for patio pots. What I like if you have a shady corner it is such a good alternative to the usual impatient suspects.
