Serviceberries are favorite of birds here.....they are OK when they are very ripe, but I don't think they have nearly the flavor of other berries. Funny to watch the birds fighting over the berries, and they strip our large shrubs bare in just a few days. I much prefer raspberries (my favorite) or blackberries. Not a huge blueberry lover.

I'm really intrigued by elderberries (2013 herb of the year). I thought it was interesting they can't be eaten fresh (are poisonous), but can eat the flowers or dried berries. Our local herb society, at their annual seminar, did some recipes with elderberries and they were delicious (used dried elderberries). There is also a fascinating lore about the shrub and it's wood. Elderberry is not nearly aS popular here in the states as it is in Europe.
