Hi Lynn (and Charlene!)
I don't have much experience with these types of plants, although my mom and SIL grow them in old boots, shoes and rock gardens. SIL grew cactus gardens for along time, until one of then nieces fell into the bed where the prickly ones were while playing and they had to take her to ER to have them taken out.. Anyway.... I didn't realize just how many types there were until I was pointed to this Room! When I learn more about them, I'm sure I'll add new ones!
I have the 'normal' ones, that I bought last year and planted the red one on the sunny side (all day) of the house and the other one in the north flower bed corner that the sun angles over the house most of the day. The northly one will probably get moved to the southwest side with the others, as it is living, just not producing chicks... I have it planted by the concrete blocks with the pussy toes, which are doing fine, but I'm thinking it just wants more of the direct sun?
