It's certainly not unusual for plants to be able to interbreed with other species within their genus. But, I sort of doubt that is the case with these plants. The nearest populations of other species of Euotrichum are at least a hundred miles away from where I collected the E. purpureum seed. I'd guess it's just a species with a high degree of variability.
