Hi .. I have a grape vine I will need to cane prune this winter. This is the second year, it really didn't do anything last year ( may have planted late? ) but this year really took off! I beleave it is a Thompson seedless ( but purchased at Home Depot, so who knows?? Smiling SO I know I need to cane prune. It has grown to hight, and I topped it, then the canes have grown out about 4 or 5 feet. It is also getting lots of vines off the canes ( some are 2 to 3 feet long already ) So hat is where my question comes from. When I prune the vine this winter, On the fruiting canes that I keep, should I prune off the vines growing off of them? Kind of like the do when you spur prune? All the pictures that I have seen showing people pruning, they are just cutting long barren canes. Mine is going to have all these canes growing off the fruiting canes?? Just doesn't seem right??? Hope someone can shine some light on this for me. This is my first time growing grapes.
Wil attach a picture from a few weeks ago ( the little one is my 5 year old daughter, she seems to end up in every picture I take LOL )
Thank You!!
