I plant mine on a hill in the hole, like you plant asparagus. Once I fill in the hole around thill with soil and water, I dont kinda stomp it donw, I however make sure to hold the plant while doing this so the plant doesnt get pushed down in the soil. You sure dont wnat any crown rot by getting it to deep.
