If you're on the coast in TX, that plant will do much better outside than in. They love warmth and humidity! Indoors in the a/c is too cool and dry for it to do well.
If the weather gets cold in the winter you might need to cover it with a sheet or blanket, or a cardboard box, but other than that, let it out! If you have good soil and shade for it, you can even grow it in the ground I would think.
