I think 3-4 short articles sounds better than a War and Peace version.
The commercial product I am aware of is
Oil Dry. I have a bag of it and yes, it seems to retain its powers forever. The sack just sits in my shop and whenever I need some I take a scoop out. I've never heated it or done anything else to prepare it.
