This is part of a larger planting area, which usually had either corn or tomatoes and peppers in summer and brassicas or winter squash later in the season (this particular photo is in spring, of plants which overwintered). All unconventional choices for a front yard, but it was camouflaged by large hedges near the street, and the neighbors never minded, especially if they got a share of the harvest
