Thanks for a great podcast, Dave and Trish. I agree with everything said so far in this tread.
In my "old age"--and after over 50 years as a gardener-- I've discovered daylilies. Yes, I've grown a few over the years, but never really got serious about it. I had no idea about the incredible number of colors, shapes, sizes, and patterns available. I was dumbfounded by the sheer number of cultivars available. One thing led to another, and I began collecting daylilies for a hybridization program. I've run every single daylily I've researched through the ATP daylily database. The amount and quality of information available in one place is unparalleled.
And the photos! I had no idea that a single cultivar could vary so much in color and even in traits. I'm so thankful that folks who uploaded photos were willing to post ones that were less than "ideal." It gave me a much more realistic idea of what I could expect. Hybridizers and growers tend to provide photos that are showy but may not be a very realistic depiction of what I can expect in my garden.
I'm excited to have my first daylily accepted for AHS registration. It will appear in the 2014 AHS daylily database. At that point I will add it to the ATP database. It's called 'Picotee Pumpkin.'
Thanks for all you do to make ATP an amazing and user friendly site.
