One relatively inexpensive way to get excellent insulation is drywall, a.k.a. gypsum board. HD had 2'x2' squares of fairly thick drywall for $5-6. I think that if you buy a 4'x8' panel, it's much cheaper per square foot.

And it is great insulation. I think you want to keep it dry, however.
