Do dormant plants mean that they need cold temps to thrive? Evergreens are southern plants, right? What about semi-evergreens?
Generally yes they need cold to thrive. I imagine in your zone they would not do well. We get enough cold here for them to do good. There are dormants that are bred in the south and do well in the warmer climates. Fred (Spunky1) has one, LILLIAN'S ALABAMA PRIDE, that is dormant and does well in the warmer parts. Usually it will be in the description I. Hybridizers website if it does well in warmer climates. I think Floyd Cove may have one or two and Petit has some.
Evergreens can do good everywhere also since there are "hardy" evergreens. I for one have never looked at foliage type when buying daylilies but most people probably do especially in colder climates. I know Florange (Arlene) on buys evergreens and researches the lines of them to make sure there is no dormancy in them or they won't do well for her.
