Some of the new complex edges we are seeing now have difficulty opening because of the entangling effects of the bubble ruffling and 'angel wings' that are becoming common on daylilies. While we enjoy the fabulous visual effects, we still rather not have to 'help' them finish opening on our morning rounds. Pictured here, 'The Fourth Angel' in spite of it's phenomenal edge only had a couple of blooms hang on my small two year clump. I can't say enough about how well this plant grows and performs in the two plus years I have grown it, but suffice to say that while the first scape was still blooming, a second one began to appear and while it was blooming a third scape came through. Believe it or not a fourth one showed in September. All this from a clump of two or three scapes. If I had a complaint, I would like to see a little more consistent form and fashion to the blooms. They are not always tidy and well formed, but when they are...... awesome.
A couple that tend to hang up here in my Indiana garden a bit more than some are 'Spectral Elegance' and 'Eloquent Cay'. Sometimes I think the bubble edges tend to hang more than the 'folds and flaps' type of edge that you see here on 'The Fourth Angel'.
