Thank you for your response. The deer protection issue is simply because the town deer up here will test any new growth on any plant to see if they might like it. If they do, poof there goes your plant !

I think the shade cloth/umbrella is probably the best solution. My summer temps are usually in the high 90s to low 100s all summer long, but cool down by 40 to 50 degrees at night, so, of course, the temps are not that high all day. However, it can easily be 100 degrees by 9am.

I am finding this is making it difficult for this novice gardener to grow young plants ... Hilarious! ...
