Don't fall into the common trap of having lawn by default. Consciously choose to use turf only in those areas where you need a kids' play space, a mown pathway, or just want the look of grass to offset your landscape beds. Places that are not good candidates for growing grass are areas directly under trees, in deep shade, or on steep hills. By limiting the amount of lawn you have to maintain, you'll save a lot of time & money on seeding, watering, mowing, fertilizing, spraying, etc.
