I don't know anything about advising you for the immediate show, but tulips don't get enough chill time to go in the ground permanently where you are. You can follow the instructions out there for saving them in warmer climates, or enjoy them as a one-time thing.

And you're right, one could fill a landscape in the south with nothing but bulb plants!
