In this photo note the slight hairyness (pubescents) on the stems and leaves.

P. virginianum has this pubescents whereas P. tenuifolium does not have hairs on the stem (P. tenuifolium is glabrous, smooth and hairless), other than that their leaf shape/form is nearly identical.
If we had no holes in our leaves we would have no butterflies!
