My thoughts too.
I have clay soil and plant in September or when its been raining. I add compost to the holes.
I plant 3 to 5 bulbs at a time.The trench method has never been used here because my gardens arent set up that way.
I also plant lilies that way. I dig a wide hole with a flat bottom and place 3 bulbs in.
