Neal: When I started gardening here 7 years ago I had never been faced with the space problem. I have a perennial and bulb mixed garden because I like the naturalized look.
I used to place plastic spoons where I wanted bulbs. I did this in spring because the perenns would mature and cover the spoons and I could easily see them in fall after garden clean up but before new bulbs came.
This worked well for a few years but now perenns are really big and its hard to wedge bulbs around them.
Like you the small bulbs are no problem but slicing into a lily is another matter.
This is a Hosta tagging with plastic spoons May 2009.
